Our aim at Gossey Lane Academy is that all children learn in a fun, engaging and stimulating way, thus enabling them to develop their full potential in every aspect of school life. We strive to meet the careful balance between scaffolding them throughout their learning, whilst encouraging the importance of independence.
Our creative approach to learning provides opportunities for children to make choices, take risks, take responsibility for their own learning, learn in a variety of ways and to make links across their learning where possible.
In EYFS children learn through a combination of child led and adult initiated activities. The learning environments (both indoors and outdoors) are structured so as to enhance learning across all the areas of learning. In Nursery there is a specific emphasis on social skills, language development, creative play, basic understanding of number, and letter and sound recognition. In Reception daily sessions of phonics, letter formation and number work are taught, as well as child initiated activities and teacher led activities through topic based work.
Throughout Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2 children develop their reading skills with daily phonics lessons, in accordance with their specific needs. Those children who have completed the phonic programme move on to a comprehension based programme. We teach phonics using the Read, Write Inc programme.
Writing is taught daily through the school’s comprehensive English scheme, with further opportunities for writing at length being provided through subjects such as RE, Science and Topic. Whenever possible, children are given an opportunity to write for a real life purpose.
Maths: Children learn through the Singapore approach to mastery in mathematics. Further opportunities for enrichment of mathematics is developed through subjects such as ICT, Science and Topic. On a termly basis the children take part in a Destination Maths challenge which gives them the opportunity to independently solve mathematical problems linked to different areas of the curriculum.
Topic is a fun, engaging, personalised, skills based curriculum tailored to the needs of the children at Gossey Lane Academy. Changing on a half termly basis, it revolves around a specific curriculum area or topic, then culminates in a focus week where children are given the opportunity to further develop or learn new skills, and to share their learning with others. Such focus weeks include: History Week, Life skills Week and Inventors Week. Trips, visitors and use of outdoor learning spaces (such as Forest School) are essential components of My Learning Journey, and are incorporated so as to maximise learning opportunities and to provide real life experiences for the children within the local and wider community.
Arts provision is embedded through our curriculum; children have opportunities to learn in and through the arts. They work with visiting arts and arts organisations, and are given opportunities to visit cultural places, such as art galleries and the theatre.
PE is taught in all year groups twice weekly (with each class receiving one session per week, led by Aspire).
RE is taught through the scheme Discover RE.
For PSHE we follow the scheme Jigsaw in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. We also have a whole school focus on VALUES education.
ICT and Science are taught discretely with opportunities for cross curricular learning through English, Maths and Topic.
Children in Key Stage 2 learn Spanish and follow the BBC Muzzy language scheme.
Whole school assemblies are held to celebrate the religious days and festivals of different faiths, and to celebrate children’s achievements and attendance. Class assemblies focus on PSHE and VALUES education. Children will also discuss local, national and global issues in the news.
